The books that I really enjoyed reading as a child were the Amelia Bedelia books by Peggy Parish. These books were about a literal maid named Amelia Bedelia who worked for an older husband and wife named Mr. and Mrs. Rogers and follows their directions to a tee. Anything that Mr. and Mrs. Rogers told her to do, she did it exact, for example dusting the couch with powder and dressing the chicken in clothes. There were many adventures Amelia Bedelia took on, including camping, driving, and taking care of a baby.
These books were very important to my life because these were the books that made me really want to read. I liked reading, but once I found these books, I really wanted to read. I wanted to read all the Amelia Bedelia books and couldn't wait for a new ones to come out. I remember going through the Scholastic book fair fliers looking for Amelia Bedelia books. I circled any that I could find and begged my mom to buy them for me. I did every book report I could on these books. These books were so important to me because they made me feel very knowledgeable about books. I knew everything about Amelia Bedelia and loved to share my knowledge with the class. These books made me feel smart, plus they were hilarious!
I used to love these books too! Her outragious adventures made my cheeks hurt from laughter. Recently, a close friend of mine had a baby and he named her Emilia - the spelling may be different, but hearing the name sent me back to my childhood.
ReplyDeleteYou also made me smile when you talked about the book fairs - those fliers seemed almost magical! Book fairs and book stores still make me excited.
Amelia Bedelia is such a great character!! I remember my favorite line from one of the Amelia Bedelia books was when she dressed the chicken up in clothes, instead of getting it ready to cook! I remember that I couldn't figure out when I was younger why anyone would hire her, but the books did keep me laughing for hours! Great Pick!
ReplyDeleteLove Amelia Bedelia! Kids always feel so clever when they are in on the joke.
ReplyDeleteI remember the line I was trying to tell you about in class! There was one book of hers that I remember (and I don't know why this was the line I remember most), and she was told to "hit the road"... so she took a stick, and started hitting the road :)
ReplyDeleteI <3 Amelia Bedelia
I loved reading these books to my children! They were books both kids AND adults could enjoy over and over again.
ReplyDeleteI loved Amelia Bedelia books! I would always check them out of the library. I "wrote" my own at one point and I still have it.
ReplyDeleteAmelia Beelia books are the best! I love to read them when I am babysitting... and I still laugh about them today. Great Choice :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know what it was about this age, but I thought Amelia Bedelia books were absolutely hilarious when I was reading them, and I would sit in my room laughing for hours about how silly she was. I remember the book where she dressed up the chicken, in a little pink dress! I'm so glad you brought this book up because I had completely forgotten about it until now! and her antics were really entertaining for me, so they made me want to read! Great books!
